Updated Sonata Unveiled in Chicago

auto show this year. Following the launch of the Sonata "Transform" model, which was introduced in Korea late last year, it includes a new grille and bumpers with chrome accent trim that give it a similar look to the upmarket Azera.

Inside, Hyundai has updated the dashboard and the console with a richer look inspired by the Veracruz. For the first time, buyers will be able to order their Sonata with navigation, while the stereo gains a USB input for direct access to MP3 players. Other changes include the addition of two-stage heated seats and dual-zone climate control.

Hyundai has also improved on the mechanical side of the Sonata with new generations of both the Theta 2.4-liter I-4 and 3.3-liter V6 engines. The base engine now offers 175 horsepower and 169 lb-ft of torque, and is now

available with a five-speed automatic with manual mode in place of the older four-speed automatic. Sonatas with manual transmissions gain a BandM short shifter for improve feel and shorter throws. The V6 gains 15 horsepower for a total of 249 hp, while torque is rated at 233 lb-ft.

Fielding criticisms regarding ride and handling, Hyundai has taken the time to rethink the Sonata's tuning. Stiffer anti-roll bars and re-tuned shock absorbers grant the Sonata extra stability without compromising its ride quality, but for those who prefer their midsizers a little sportier, a new sport model will be offered with a stiffer ride and larger anti-roll bars. New wheels round out the update.
