An XJ220 Replacement in the Making?

Though this concept car is called the BlackJag, the company that designed and engineered it has nothing to do with the legendary British motor company. It bears the leaping cat badge for sure, but the BlackJag project was executed completely separate of Jaguar, aside from authorization to use the brand name.

Several thousand miles away in Barcelona, Spain, the independent design firm Fuore has crafted what they believe to be the future of Jaguar sports cars. This low, sleek super-sports car is the second of such vehicles that Fuore

has created under the Jaguar badge, following the FX10 supercar unveiled last year.

While its true that the BlackJag and the FX10 may appear very similar upon first glance, there are quite a few differences between the two. The BlackJags nose is less elongated and more flowing than its predecessor, and the new car

doesnt carry the metallic stripe that spans the length of the hood, running from the base of the windshield to the grille. The second Fuore Jaguars headlamps stretch out sideways as opposed to being slim vertically stacked units, while secondary grilles and ventilation slats integrated into the front fascia are different. Foglights are nixed on the newer concept car too. The split mesh grille, which forms the leading edge of the BlackJags

front bumper, stays, albeit somewhat modified.

But in reality the BlackJag looks more like an updated FX10 than a completely new car. The similarities between the two concept cars start with near identical sweptback, mid-engine supercar shapes and obvious carryover styling cues. But then again, some of those details are inherent Fuore design characteristics seen in other concepts such as Subarus racy B11 S. Still, the BlackJag is the best execution, featuring hunched shoulder lines at its fenders, sweeping intake vents for the mid-mounted engine

and a geometrical tail end that juts outwards toward its bottom. The doors on this concept car open upwards and outwards unlike the previous car, while a strange pod sits atop the roof.

The BlackJag measures in at 179.1 inches long, 77.95 inches wide, and 47.6 inches tall - quite compact for a supercar. Total weight of the Fuore concept is 2,976 pounds.

In its current state, the BlackJag is a static show car rather than a working model like most of todays concept cars. This doesnt mean, however, that its unfinished or incomplete. Stuffed into the back of the sexy supercars slender body is a 7.0-liter V10 that produces a whopping

640 horsepower. The motor is sourced from Ford, at least keeping things in the extended family, plus it ties the new concept to Jaguars Formula 1 effort more succinctly than would the brands supercharged 4.2-liter AJ-V8. Its 6-speed sequential manual gearbox adds to the F1 flair.
