Gorgeous Concept Unveiled in Detroit

At any major auto show you can find different types of concept vehicles, and this years North American International Auto Show is a perfect case scenario. There are concepts, such as the Ford SYNus which allowed designers and craftsmen to express artistic freedom, and in some cases, boggle the mind, while vehicles such as the Acura RD-X and the Nissan Azeal give a crystal ball-like glimpse into the not too distant future. In recent years developments in safety and technology, such as the Mercury Meta One and the GM Advance Technology trio have also highlighted these events.

But no auto show of this caliber would be

complete without a beautiful and graceful sports machine. This sort of jaw-dropping, show-stopping, performance car, to make full-grown men drool, was present at this years NAIAS show in Detroit, and it came in the form of the Jaguar Advanced Lightweight Coupe (ALC for short).

The Advanced

Lightweight Coupe concept is the most recent in a string of stunning Jaguar concept cars, transformed from simple sketch to operational machine under the watchful eye of Ian Callum, Jaguars Design Director. As his third, and possibly his most influential concept, the Coupe follows an evolutionary design chain starting with the simple but beautiful R-Coupe and the controversial four-door, diesel-powered RD-6 hatchback.

The bodywork of the ALC is clean, giving the image that the cars skin has been pulled taut over the bare necessities. (Photo: Jaguar Cars North America) align="justify">Like past concepts, and production vehicles, the ALC was styled under the influence of the "Platonic" Jaguar, the 1960s XJ sedan. As revolutionary and beautiful as the XJ was for Jaguar, its upright snout and four, rounded headlamps, curving roof line and sleek trunk are not featured here. Instead, the concept draws from the original cars proportions and stance - namely, how the car sits on the road. The hunkered-down look of the ALC is directly in tune with Callums beliefs that

a Jaguar should appear powerful and elegant.

Working upwards from its comically oversized 21-inch alloy wheels, the Lightweight Coupe is a vehicle that seems to be styled with heart and soul, like the gorgeous E-Type. But like the E-Type, emotion was not the driving force behind the way it the vehicle looks, rather, minimalism and mathematical calculations dictated the visuals, the same process that Malcolm Sayer used in the original 60s swinger.

While the ALC wasnt styled solely from geometrical shapes to produce

the most aerodynamic figure, certain parts of its design, such as the grille used geometry to correctly center it on the horizontal and vertical planes of the vehicle. Like the E, every single line, stemming from the oval grille focal point can be streamlined over its body. Bar the powerful bulge which stretches down the hood of the ALC, the bodywork of the car is clean giving the image that the cars skin has been pulled taut over the bare necessities.
