The Style of Future Lincolns in a Sweet Teaser

One look at the Mark X two-seat concept roadster and its easy to tell that its based off of the Ford Thunderbird, but with advanced "Lincolnesque" elements.

The Mark X (meant to refer to the Roman numeral for 10 by the way) features a polished aluminum egg-crate grille, a rippling pattern of vertical and horizontal chrome trim that will appear on future Lincolns, Mays said.

"Move your eye across the elegant body side, which is drenched in beautiful Atlantic Pearl paint, and youll notice the Mark X profile is accented by a chrome finisher on its upper

shoulder line as well as the polished aluminum door handles that are flush mounted to the doors," Mays said. "In the rear, the Mark X features a clean boat tail fascia. Wide led lamps accent the Lincoln star and dual exhausts are cut neatly under the Mark Xs sloping tail lamps."

For those

times when you dont want an open-air roadster, the push of a button will deploy the concepts two-piece powered glass folding roof. The rear section of the roof comes out of its storage compartment as the rear decklid opens, then the side windows drop slightly before the entire hardtop swings into place in 30 seconds. Its a different operation than the T-birds fabric soft-top and optional one-piece

hardtop roof, which doesnt compromise the cars expansive 15 cubic feet of trunk space.

The Mark X is just a concept, though, OConnor said. "There are cues there that we want to see what people think about them."

It has been reported, however, that Ford plans on discontinuing the four-year-old Thunderbird, so why would it build a concept car off of the platform?

"We havent put a final date on the Thunderbird

production; its here for the foreseeable future," OConnor said. "We did 18,000 sales on it in 2003. In our best year, we did 22,000 in North America. So it is good. There are only so many people who will buy a two-seater that you will take out instead of your boat."

"Its an extra vehicle, but at 18,000 units, the Thunderbird is the best selling $40,000 two-seater in the industry."

Concept Has Elegance Inside

Inside the Mark X concept, it has a leather lined trunk and plush sheepskin flooring, Mays noted. The cabin is wrapped

in lime Sorbet leather and highlighted with accents like Corian, polished aluminum, and dark chrome.

The four-spoke, power adjustable steering wheel is wrapped in soft leather and dark chrome and places the cruise, audio and navigation controls at the drivers fingertips. The instrument panel features a softly illuminated jewel-like instrument cluster using analog and digital gauges.

The jewel-like detailing harkens back to some of the great Lincolns of the early 1950s and late 1960s, and will be used on future vehicles, Mays noted.
