The idea behind the car is to bring plug-in hybrid technologies to the brand's best-seller, improving fuel economy while reducing fuel consumption.
The car, dubbed Golf Twin Drive, features a combination of gasoline and electric power, working together as a series hybrid like the Volt. Once the battery's stocks are depleted, the internal combustion portion fires up. The electric motor is remarkably powerful for a vehicle of this type, putting out 82 horsepower. That's almost as much as its 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine, which makes 122 horsepower. As with just about every hybrid that's being introduced, the electric half is juiced up by a lithium ion battery. The Golf Twin Drive is capable of moving along on electrical power for up to 30 miles; which should dramatically reduce the amount of fuel the average consumer uses on a daily basis.

Besides packaging all the hybrid components in the conventional structure and body of a Golf, the other noteworthy thing about the Golf Twin Drive is its navigation system; it doubles as the info system which displays details about power flow, battery life and other points.
Although Volkswagen hasn't made any formal plans to bring out a Twin Drive-powered car anytime soon, the fact that it's committed to building a concept vehicle and is researching the technology is a strong indication that it is at work on coming up with a zero-emissions solution for the future.
