Veyron is Worlds Most Sophisticated Car

Which automaker builds the worlds fastest production car? Well, that title still belongs to Swedens Koenigsegg and its sensational CCR, which was piloted to a record-setting 241.01 mph by veteran tester Loris Biocchi earlier this year (see automotive news for Mar 11, 2005: Koenigsegg CCR Goes 241 mph to Break World Speed Record!).

That record will most certainly fall, however, if Volkswagen AGs Bugatti division ever brings its EB 16.4 Veyron to market. Late in April,

Bugatti pushed its Veyron to almost 250 mph (248.5 mph) on a high speed section of VWs Ehra - Lessien proving grounds, crushing its closest rival.

Supervised by the German Homologation Authority "TÜV Süddeutschland" and officially chronometered by their precision measuring

units, the Veyron achieved its record-setting pace several times in both directions, requirements of official measuring procedures.

"The Bugatti super-sports-car has thus attained yet another major goal in it ambitious development process," stated a company spokesman.

A production version of the Veyron has been expected for years, but despite prototypes showing up at auto shows, on the racetrack at Monterey, CA, and elsewhere,

nothing that can be purchased has become available.

According to Bugatti, production of pre-run models has been underway at the carmakers studio in Molsheim, France. A pilot lot was supposed to have been initiated at the beginning of this month, which should mean production models will be forthcoming this summer, or at the very latest, fall. Bugatti is targeting its first order by the second half of 2005.

When it does become available, it will be the most powerful production sports car on the planet. Its 8.0-liter W16 engine currently produces 1001 PS (metric horsepower), which is the equivalent

to 987-horsepower as we calculate it here in America. And what about torque? A total of 922 lb-ft should make for quick sprints to 60 mph, let alone up to its top speed of 250 mph.

The car also boasts the most advanced braking system around, which not only incorporates a state of the art carbon-ceramic/titanium conventional disc/caliper setup, but also uses a unique cooling system for what Bugatti describes as "extremely fade-resistance". Whats more, the rear wing acts as an airbrake when at speeds over 125 mph - taking only 0.4 seconds to initiate.

The impressive car will bring new meaning to the word expensive, but its owners will have the knowledge that theyre in possession of the fastest, and most sophisticated road car ever made. No doubt, Bugatti will sell every example it can build.
