version of the CL, Mercedes' biggest and most luxurious sport utility, the GL has just been downsized - in concept form for the time being. The GLK Freeside concept is Mercedes-Benz's vision of what the ideal compact sport utility vehicle should be, a vehicle to compete against the BMW X3, Land Rover LR2, upcoming Audi Q5 and others.

Though the GLK may have GL as a part of its name, mechanically and physically it has little to do with the big SUV. It's based on the C-Class compact luxury sedan and uses its front and rear suspension. It even abides by the whole “Agility Control” theme introduced with the small sedan, but features “amplitude-dependent damping” which will allow it to resist roll while on pavement, although provides a decent level of shock absorption when off-roading. And speaking of off-roading, the GLK Freeside features the next-generation of 4Matic all wheel drive, which offers a 45:55 power split bias. Being a

friction-based system, however Mercedes-Benz has been able to significantly reduce drag loss, thereby boosting fuel economy. The GLK Freeside also features a hill descent control system and an off-road mode button which optimizes the transmission, throttle response and stability control when off-road.

The Freestyle may have C-Class roots but there's no mistaking its GL, or rather G-Wagon inspired styling. Where others have gone for a more organic look, it's back to boxy and upright for the three-pointed star. The concept features unique white paintwork with gray lower cladding that can be removed and replaced easily if damaged while off-road.

which are distinct from any other Mercedes-Benz currently on the market. In usual concept fashion, the car is finished with white-colored leather seats complemented by dark contrasting piping and unusual dark cebrano wood trim with a white grain dashboard appliqué. Short of these, what you see will most likely be what consumers will be getting.
