Mercedes-Benz is pulling off a double debut with the launch of the GLK Concepts,

introducing both urban and rural versions of the three pointed star's up and coming compact SUV. Last week we were given a peek at the GLK Freeside Concept, and now they've bumped things up with the launch of the GLK Townside in Detroit, the city slicker's version.

The key difference between the Townside and the Freeside are off-roading abilities, as mechanically and structurally the two concepts are identical. Although the Townside still features 4Matic for all-weather traction, it looses ground clearance. Smaller springs allow the Townside to sit some 1.2 inches lower than its country cousin, not to mention the sportier multi-spoke alloy wheels. Mercedes-Benz also changed a bit of the bodywork, giving the urban-friendly model a less bulgy and muscular appearance plus a new grille, and has removed the Freeside's roof rack and side cladding.
Expect to see something close to this interior in production trim. (Photo: Mercedes-Benz)

Inside, the interior of the Townside is nearly identical to the Freeside with the exception of a couple of minor trim and accent pieces. Its interior is even closer to what we'd expect for the production model, with sporty seats and brushed aluminum trim replacing the wild striped wood.

It's fairly certain that Mercedes-Benz will offer the production version of the GLK with a choice of appearance packages, which would be similar to what the brand did with the launch of the new C-Class, a car that's available in classic and Sport variants.

We'll have to wait and see when the production GLK comes to market next year.
