Wondering what's happening with the Lexus RX? You're not the only one. The

platform-mate to the Toyota Highlander is now in its fourth year in production and is in its second generation. And while the RX is still a solid performer in terms of sales figures, it's getting a little long in the tooth compared to some of its key rivals, such as the recently redesigned Acura MDX, BMW X5, and the slightly older Mercedes-Benz ML. Furthermore, the second generation Highlander was just launched this year, which is a signal that something new is on the way from Lexus.

Fear not, as Lexus has just announced that for this year's Tokyo auto show it will be showing off a brand new luxury crossover concept vehicle. In typical Lexus concept car nomenclature, the vehicle will be called the LF-Xh, the “X” standing for crossover, and the h standing for none other than hybrid.

Speaking of hybrid, one of the great successes of the RX range is in fact the hybrid model, the RX 400h. It pairs the standard gasoline motor with the

Toyota-Lexus developed full hybrid system to provide electrical assistance and a way of cutting back on fuel consumption and emissions. Granted that it had a fairly hefty lead over the launch of any environmentally friendly alternative powered luxury SUV, such as the diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz ML or the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, it enabled Lexus to stand alone in the segment. Lexus is, of course, keen to capitalize on its hybrid drivetrain technologies, as it offers hybrids in many different models including the GS 450h, and its flagship LS 600h L.

The RX's styling has always been a nice fit into the Lexus range, but the new LF-Xh marks a new high as it features the full Lexus L-Finesse design treatment. Just like the IS, LS or any other recent Lexus, the LF-Xh displays a body that's less rounded and more angular, without compromising aerodynamics. Where the current and previous generation

of the RX looked a bit like an egg, the concept's nose is much more upright with an unusually shaped front bumper and front fenders. At the corners, the LF-Xh features narrow vertical intakes that remind us of the super-performance IS-F sedan, but from some angles we see a touch of Honda CR-V.
