Mercedes-Benz's CLS four-door coupe has been a pretty big success considering it's a car

that was designed as a niche model. Based off the E-Class, this shapely luxury car has gone on to influence the likes of Aston Martin, BMW, Fisker, Jaguar, Porsche and even Volkswagen. For the upcoming year, the CLS will undergo a mild facelift, and when we say mild, we really do mean it.

The key difference between the old CLS and this new one is the grille. Rather than four bars, the grille will have two bars, and its three-pointed star logo will be larger than before. The car also gets new front and rear valances, plus new wheels. For those who are keen on details, the new CLS also has LED taillights, trapezoidal tailpipes and new side-view mirrors that are bigger and feature integrated turn signals that form arrows when lit. Inside, the CLS gets a new three-spoke steering wheel plus the latest generation of navigation and entertainment systems.

Mechanically, the two CLS models sold here, the CLS550 and the CLS63 AMG will carry on unchanged, although the 7G-Tronic gearbox on the AMG version gains new software that allows it to blip the throttle on downshift. Perhaps Mercedes-Benz will take the opportunity to launch a more basic version in North America, such as the new CLS 350 featuring the SLK's upgraded engine. And while it won't be offered here, an entry level CLS280 model featuring the 3.0-liter V6 from the C300 will be sold in Europe, as will a variety of diesels.

This mild update will launch later this year, and will be important for carrying the CLS through to its next major update.
