New Nissan Crossover Concept Slated for Detroit Auto Show

Is This the Next-Generation Sentra?

Nissan has been on a roll of new products and stellar sales as of late, that doesnt look like its letting up. Feeling confident going into Januarys 2004 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Japanese brand will debut a new concept vehicle thats sure to wow the crowd.

Suggested to be the basis for the next generation Sentra compact, the stylish prototype drops the familiar 3-box layout for a wagon-like 2-box design. If the Sentra were to adopt this configuration, it would be a major shift for what has always been a conventional sedan.

As far as concepts go, however, the Small Crossover Concept, as it is called, isnt the first two-box design to leave the brands styling studios as of late. Just unveiled at Tokyos auto show was the Nissan C-Note concept, what many on that side of the Pacific are considering the Sentra (Almera/Sunny) replacement. To those having spent time in Europe it looks all too similar to parent company Renaults Mégane.

Either concept would fit

in well with Nissans upbeat new-edge image. According to Nissan, the new Small Crossover Concept is designed for a "life in transition," taking a carefree look at what the future might hold.

It features a modular passenger compartment capable of carrying 6 occupants and some luggage. It includes a sophisticated information technology system as well, as expected in a car of the future.

The Small Crossover Concept also features a distinctive roof treatment, designed to "reflect drivers desire for both functionality and personality."

The next-generation Sentra isnt expected for at least a year, destined to go into production for the 2006 model year. Also look forward to a new Pathfinder, Xterra and Frontier just before, expected for model year 2005.
