Dodge Avenger Concept Said to Influence New Models Styling

Just as Chrysler has shaken up the midsize segment with its new 300, and hopes to repeat the process with the launch of its stylish new Dodge Charger, the Auburn Hills automakers next-generation compact is sure to ruffle a few feathers.

Recent spy shots depict something similar to the Dodge Avenger concept car that was introduced in Detroit in 2003, an altogether unique compact that will be sure to stand out in a segment that is all too often filled with

me-too sedans and 5-door hatchbacks.

Confirming early reports, the new model will share its general architecture with the upcoming Mitsubishi GS, the new name expected for the Lancer replacement, which will bode

well for the domestic brand. After all, the Mitsubishi version will also spawn the next-generation EVO IX rally car, one of the best handling vehicles available for sale.

The Neon replacement, codenamed PM49, couldnt arrive too soon, as new models from competing brands having been encroaching on what was once a very profitable model for Chrysler Group. When

it arrives, in late 2005 as a 2006 model year, it is expected to be available in a variety of body styles, including a 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and 5-door hatch - the latter is expected first, however.

Under the hood will be a new family of 4-cylinder engines co-developed in a joint venture with DaimlerChrysler, Mitsubishi and Hyundai and produced in Dundee, Michigan, said to improve performance, refinement, fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Mitsubishi has the most to

offer this trio, with its sophisticated MIVEC valve control system.

The system, short for Mitsubishi Innovative Valve and lift timing Electronic Control, uses two different cam profiles to optimize the engines dual intake valves. At 3,500 rpm a more radical lobe engages allowing the engine to pull with the ferocity of a turbo, but with a much more linear ramp-up of power and more tractable torque curve. Also important, both fuel economy and emissions are improved.

The new engine will be featured in a variety of Chrysler Group vehicles that will also share the new compacts chassis architecture. Two of

these will be car-based SUVs, one from Dodge and the other for Jeep.

Not much is known about the Dodge version, other than that it will also resemble the Avenger concept car, but the upcoming Jeep is expected to be influenced by the Compass concept of 2002. When produced, it will be the first vehicle in decades to wear the Jeep name that is not "Trail Rated", a move that has some auto industry experts concerned the brands go-anywhere image will suffer.
