Oddball Jetcar to Be Built in Limited Numbers

Jetcar Combines Design Cues from the Past and Present Day Technology

Narrow, quirky and almost as if it werent from this planet, the Jetcar offers an alternative to conventional commuter cars. Rather than tall and wide, the current trend in automotive design, the Jetcar bucks the status quo with its low and thin proportions.

Completely and utterly unique, the Jetcar is a modern day flashback to the late 50s when countless sub 500cc microcars, now comical, putted and rolled their way out of European, Japanese and even domestic plants. But as humorous as it may appear, could the Jetcar be just what our modern

bumper-to-bumper traffic jam world needs?

Long and slender, this new offering stirs memories of the oddball classic Messerschmitt TG500 and TG1000 Tigers. Starting out as a thin three-wheeled commuter, the Tiger turned out to be one of the most successful microcars during its time period, and is one of the most highly regarded, even against the BMW Isetta.

Avid gamers should easily be able to recall its presence in the hit game Grand Theft Auto 2 as the Schmidt, while movie buffs wont be able to put the even stranger film Brazil out of their minds, with its zany Monty Python cast and star-studded cameo appearances that included Robert Deniro. While no movie deals have been announced, and nary a game company in sight, line for line and comparing profiles, the Jetcar could very well be the Messerschmitt Tigers modern day cousin.

The shape is the main reason for its unorthodox seating position. Like

the classic German, the Jetcar carries two occupants in tandem as in a jet fighter trainer - hence the aeronautical name. Entrance to the cockpit comes via side doors, which cut deep into the cars frame. Surrounded by curved glass and wafer thin pillars, it is doubtful theres a car on the market with better forward and side-to-side visibility. Looking rearward, however, is a totally different matter. Only a tiny peephole is offered to see whats coming up from behind - possibly a problem if left lane hogging on the autobahn.

But in North America its 160 km/h top speed should be ample to not impede faster motorists, as the Jetcars 800cc 3-cylinder turbodiesel engine, sleek aerodynamics and light weight should

contribute to happily move it along.

It also might just be the most economical car to grace the planet. With an estimated fuel economy figure of between 94 and 67 mpg, only the prototype VW 1L car - that incidentally looks very similar - can top it.

But unlike the Volkswagen, which was only developed as a study, the Jetcar will go into limited production. For 2004, its expected that the company will produce roughly 100, each built by hand.

But while assembled in-house the Jetcar makes extensive use of components featured in the Smart City Coupe (DaimlerChrysler). Not only is the engine sourced directly from the tiny European car, but the wheels, seats and much of the interior.

While no plans have been announced to sell it in North America, the Jetcar offers an interesting alternative to commuting in Europe, putting a twist into metropolitan transportation.
