Opel's big debut in Geneva, as previewed in a sketch, will be the next generation
Small, cute, efficient... couldn't you see this roaming our streets? (Photo: Opel)
Meriva, a subcompact-sized tall wagon. A popular vehicle in Europe and around the globe, it is based off the Opel Corsa, Opel's subcompact, but has been stretched in all directions to offer nearly as much room as the Astra. Such clever packaging has allowed it to become a veritable sales success. The upcoming generation improves on everything, with a brand new design language and many clever features.

One of the most notable new features of the Meriva are its FlexDoors, which are a pair of rear-hinged “suicide” doors that open a full 90 degrees for easy access to the rear quarters. Unlike the Mazda RX-8 or the new defunct Saturn Ion Coupe, these doors do not feature an integrated pillar, allowing them to be opened and shut separate of the front door, making them vastly more convenient. Due to the nature of safety – to prevent occupants of ill will from “whacking” pedestrians and cyclists –

they can only be operated while the vehicle is stopped.

The Meriva Concept draws a lot of its styling cues from last year's Flextreme Concept, as well as many other Opel products. Its lightning bolt window line is distinctive, as is its U-shaped, full panoramic sunroof that stretches from the hood all the way to the back of the vehicle.

From the looks of things, GM promises that the production version of the Meriva will be very close to the concept. If this is true, then it appears like this little tall wagon would fit very well within the Saturn lineup, and we only hope that GM will consider it for sale here.
