Lewis Hamilton used the momentum from his first Formula 1 win in Montreal last week to capitalize at the US Grand Prix this weekend. Hamilton scored another pole, which turned into another win. His teammate Fernando Alonso was second, and the Ferrari boys got back on track with Felipe Massa third and Kimi Raikkonen fourth. Fifth was Renault's Heikki Kovalainen, who is turning his season around.
Falling even further out of favor is Toyota's Ralf Schumacher, who was involved in a three car shunt at the first turn. You have to wonder just how long Ralf will stay in that seat. Third driver (aka test driver) Sebastian Vettel filled in for Robert Kubica, still recovering from his spectacular accident last week, at Williams Toyota. Vettel scored a point in his first Grand Prix. Kubica is expected to be back at the next Grand Prix. The rest of the year should be very interesting as it appears McLaren Mercedes has inflicted the “have-at-it” rule between their | | The start of the USGP. (Photo: Ferrari) | two drivers. Both clearly now seem to be able to race at will – even with each other – which really is the only way it can be. Hamilton should thank the ever present British press for keeping the team honest. They watch his every move, hoping he is a suitable replacement for Jenson Button, the last British racing hero. Button has failed miserably, but to quote one Brit journalist, Hamilton can “do the business” – I'm guessing that is a good thing. 2007 United States Grand Prix Race Results Pos No Driver Team Laps Time/Retired Grid Points 1 2 Lewis Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes 73 Winner 1 10 2 1 Fernando Alonso McLaren-Mercedes 73 +1.5 secs 2 8 3 5 Felipe Massa Ferrari 73 +12.8 secs | | Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton, after Hamilton won his second straight Grand Prix. "Tony has stressed to Bernie in these meetings that we want to continue the event," said Chitwood. "We believe he feels the same.” Uh, Joie, if you were meeting with him, why not ask him. The rough translation is Bernie wants more money. Chitwood went on to say, “With eight years experience with the USGP, both Tony and Bernie know what the challenges are. If we are going to have a USGP in 2008, we know that we need to make the announcement and start working on the event by the second week of July.” Basically it seems it went like this. Bernie wants more money, Tony said no – those are the “challenges”. Then Tony tried hardball, saying that we have to have it done by July 12 or goodbye F1.
Bernie is not likely to fold under this kind of tactic with Singapore and others waiting for GPs, and a one week trip to Canada would suit the teams fine. Like always, the issue is money, and it seems at this point Bernie is happy to go elsewhere. Tony clearly has his head in the clouds – look at what the Indy 500 has become ...
