JV Gets to Test and Possibly Drive Third Place Renault Car for Remainder of Season

Canadian race fans will be celebrating across the country with yesterdays F1 news. World Champion Jacques Villeneuve will once again join the paddock on a full-time basis, having been signed to Sauber Petronas for the 2005 season onwards.

According to Team Principal Peter Sauber, JVs championship title isnt what gave him the lead over rival drivers, but rather his determination to rejoin Formula 1 made the difference.

"I have to admit that signing a former World Champion is something truly special for me," said Sauber. "However, I want to make it clear that this was not the decisive factor. When I was talking to Jacques, I could feel that he is absolutely keen and committed to return to Formula One."

The 33-year-old

French Canadian has signed a two-year contract, which will come into effect on November 1, 2004. Jacques Villeneuve will be teammate to current Sauber driver Felipe Massa, someone he has been extremely critical of previously. Most expect a more reserved JV during the 2005 season, however, most likely less willing to be so candid with the press as in previous years and no doubt less critical of his teammate.

While Sauber chose JV on his enthusiasm and, of course, proven talent, the team leader doesnt

take signing a world champion lightly.

"I fully realize that signing a former World Champion is also an obligation for the team to provide him with a car that meets his expectations," said Sauber. "Sauber Petronas has made considerable progress this year, and I am confident that we are ready to tackle this challenge."

Villeneuve is also feeling optimistic, stating, "I am extremely excited to be back in Formula 1 with the Sauber Petronas team, and I appreciate the confidence everybody is showing in me."

That confidence not only comes from his 1997 World Championship and 11 career race wins, but also due to the fighting spirit

he displayed each weekend as he battled forward through the mid-pack in a BAR Honda that was anything but competitive.

Sauber commented, "He was always a great fighter and I am convinced that together we can achieve a lot."

JV, enthusiastic but reserved in his optimism, added, "It is my goal to work with Peter and his team to bring them forward in the championship during the next two seasons. In my recent visit to Sauber I have been extremely impressed by the professionalism which is apparent throughout the factory. I am looking forward to seeing the results that will be developed by the state-of-the-art wind tunnel."

restraints have held the Hinwil, England based team back from challenging the F1 leaders. Villeneuve has the experience and driving talent to give Sauber Petronas that extra edge to compete with other well ranked teams.

Currently Saubers 29 points gives it a solid sixth position in the 2004 championship, placing ahead of Jaguar (10), Toyota (9), Jordan (5), and Minardi (1). Still, it has a lot of catching up to do in order to pass by 5th place and climbing McLaren-Mercedes (52), while the rest of the pack, which includes Williams-BMW (60), Renault (91), BAR Honda (94) and Ferrari (234) is even further ahead.
