Startech Crossfire Sports 426-HP from 6.1-L V8 Retrofit

Tuned Crossfire Delivers Aerodynamic, Suspension, Braking and Interior Upgrades Too

Hot on the tire treads of Chrysler Groups announcement of a 333-hp supercharged factory version of its sensationally hot Crossfire coupe and upcoming roadster, dubbed the SRT-6, Startech has unveiled its own tuned Startech Coupe V8 6.1 hotrod at the L.A. Auto Show (first shown at Frankfurts IAA in September).

Not willing to "make do" with a mere V6, the Startech team has squeezed an expanded displacement 6.1-L Mercedes-Benz V8 into the "Starfire," producing 426-hp at 5,400 rpm and 458 lb-ft of torque at 4,600. Its quick to 60 mph at 4.6 seconds, before speeding to a top

speed of 186 mph. All the power goes down to the rear wheels via a 5-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick manual mode and a custom-developed locking differential.

The Crossfire is already a stunning handler, but due to the additional stress on all systems Startech has fitted gas-pressure shocks, progressive-rate springs and stronger sport sway bars. The sport suspension upgrade has been calibrated to compensate for the

8-cylinder engines greater weight. Despite the racier specs, Startech states its suspension is comfortable for everyday driving.

Rounding out the handling package are exclusive one-piece Startech Monostar IV 8.5Jx19 five-spoke wheels on Pirelli 235/35 ZR 19 performance tires in front and 9Jx20 rims wrapped in 255/30 ZR 20s at the back.

Startech paid attention to the brakes too, upping the standard 4-wheel disc ABS system to larger diameter 355 mm vented and cross-drilled discs up front and 300 mm in the rear, with six- and four-piston fixed calipers respectively.

Rear axle lift is reduced via Startechs exclusive diffuser inserts for the stock rear bumper, as well as a roof spoiler and three-piece rear spoiler, which features a center piece that extends with the Crossfires stock spoiler. Other Starfire exclusives include a handmade silver carbon for the dash, center console, door panels, shift knob and e-brake handle, plus a unique sport steering wheel.

Yet more upgrades include brushed stainless-steel sill plates with an illuminated Startech logo plus rich velour floor mats.

Whats more, Startech has even gone to the extent of including a distinctive cargo cover with partition grill, plus a telephone console with integrated hands-free operation. Also, a VDO Dayton MS 4200 RS navigation system has been integrated.

Startech is planning an "exclusive small-series production run" of its Coupe V8 6.1, with no prices set as of its Los Angeles debut. While the advent of this tuned Crossfire is exciting news for performance car enthusiasts on the whole, it should be especially gratifying to Chrysler execs and faithful fans of the brand that a tuner car company has chosen one of its cars to upgrade, a prospect that might have seemed inconceivable before the funky PT Cruiser was introduced a few years ago. Now the German company tunes a version of the PT as well, plus pretty well every other Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicle available in Europe or imported specifically by Startech.
