world's cheapest automobile, the “one lakh” Nano, and more recently it launched itself into the headlines again by purchasing Ford's premiere British brands, thereby becoming the official stewards of Jaguar and Land Rover. Now, reports are starting to flow in that Tata is interested in taking up a stake in a few other companies.

According to Automotive News, Tata is considering purchasing a stake in Italian design and engineering firm, Pininfarina. The coachworks firm hasn't exactly been in the healthiest state in terms of its finances, although it is better off than some of its rival design houses (Bertone, for instance). The addition of Tata to the list of investors would certainly help - French firm Bollare is already investing heavily in Pininfarina, and will be its partner in its electric car venture. With the new shareholders, the family stake in the firm could drop to as low as

30-percent.

Pininfarina could benefit Tata in many ways, helping the brand execute engineering for its future Tata brand cars, and could also provide a production facility for the second generation global model.

Although much of Tata's focus has been on cars, it may be expanding its operations into motorcycles. According to reports, Tata is in talks with the heads of Italian motorcycle manufacturer, MV Agusta, which, incidentally, is also suffering from financial woes.

Two wheels or four, it looks like Tata is well on its way to becoming an automotive force to be reckoned with!
